With the benefit of Kaashif’s unique focus and energy, the firm quickly built an international client base drawn from European and Asian investors, from established businesses and individuals in the Middle East, and from corporate and multinational clients further afield.
In its first years of practice the firm established and cemented its reputation as a leader in advisory and dispute resolution services in the DIFC.
In September 2010, the firm was restructured under the name KBH Kaanuun and expanded to encompass its Kuwait office, led by Basem Al Muthafer, and its Bahrain office, under the direction of Haifa Khunji, The firm was now a regional practice and its clients had the benefit of the greater perspectives and options, and of the efficiencies, associated with cross-jurisdictional expertise and scale.
Kaashif sadly passed away in June 2013 leaving behind an enduring legacy of professionalism, high standards and integrity. Before his untimely death, he entrusted the reigns of the firm to his long-standing friend DK Singh, who is now the firm’s Managing Partner and Bushra Ahmed. DK Singh joined KBH as a Dubai partner in August 2012, having given a promise to his friend and protégé, then seriously ill, that he would look after the firm and secure its future success. Bushra Ahmed joined in January 2013, and together they have built the firm to the success and position it enjoys today.
As an established partner at SNR Denton, London, DK Singh brought with him significant strength and depth of commercial expertise and experience in the financial services, hospitality, retail, upstream and downstream petrochemical, and investment/private equity sectors throughout Europe, the Middle East, India, North Africa and CIS countries.
This was consolidated by the strong advocacy skills in commercial disputes of Bushra Ahmed, a dynamic barrister who had been practicing at Ely Place Chambers, London before joining KBH. She led the firm’s Dubai dispute resolution practice and is now a Dubai Partner.
In the 5 years from late 2012 to early 2018 KBH has evolved to its present size and profile. During this time the firm has consolidated its unequalled and exceptional record as an expert winning firm in contentious matters before the DIFC Courts and wider afield, including in related cases before the English courts. This period has also seen the completion of significant regional mandates that have elevated the firm’s reputation and capacity on our corporate commercial and private client side.
The firm’s evolution has been underpinned by the founding ethos of the firm, being KBH’s core values of reliability, innovation and quality of advice. The firm is now firmly positioned as a small international law firm of the first rank, with a core capacity and expertise in advisory and contentious matters having a commercial, investment, financial services or DIFC law element.
In the years ahead KBH is aiming to expand its arbitration practice and to develop its complementary onshore capacity in the UAE. This will match its onshore offering in the other jurisdictions where it is present, and serve also as a platform for growth of its corporate commercial, investigations and dispute resolution practices.
