Patrick is a practicing barrister of more than 22 years standing with specialist expertise in commercial litigation and international arbitration. Called to the Bars of Ireland and England & Wales, and a Senior Counsel in Ireland since 2013, Patrick is now an accredited lawyer and advocate before the DIFC Courts in Dubai. His practice focuses on international litigation and arbitration across the full range of commercial, corporate, insurance and regulatory matters.
In the course of his career as a barrister Patrick has represented and acted for public and private entities across a broad spectrum of commercial and regulated activity. He has significant experience and expertise in insurance and financial services law, in liability and indemnity aspects of complex construction and insurance disputes, and in comparative constitutional and administrative law. In addition to his international arbitration experience, Patrick has worked as a consultant in international multi-jurisdiction litigation, including, in 2016, with Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira, Madrid, in the field of worldwide antitrust damages claims.
Patrick is a former Legal Advisor at the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, France, and former Lecturer in Law, University College Galway, Ireland. He also previously worked as a legal advisor at the Law Reform Commission of Ireland and at the European Parliament, Luxembourg.
Patrick has significant comparative law experience in contentious matters, including in the UK, Spain, France and the UAE, and he has advised, represented and acted in important landmark cases in Ireland and before the DIFC Courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
A CEDR accredited mediator since 2009, Patrick is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has a growing interest and expertise in international arbitral adjudication. He speaks fluent French, Spanish and German, and in the course of his career has worked through all three languages.
Patrick is a former Editor and Member of the Editorial Board of the Bar Review (Ireland). He has written and published widely on commercial and administrative law.
